Workshop to address global food traceability
Tuesday August 5, 2008

TechInsights has announced the final agenda for the 'Food Traceability: Securing the Food Supply Chain' workshop to be held during the RFID World 2008 conference in Las Vegas in September.

The workshop will address recent food safety crises and includes a presentation of the results of an extensive produce traceability case study funded by the Economic Development Alliance of Hawaii and administered by the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation.

Invaluable insights
"Hawaii's recent and extensive produce traceability pilot project provides invaluable insights into the viability of RFID technology to dramatically improve food supply chain safety," said Dr. John Ryan, administrator for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture's quality-assurance division, "In addition to unveiling implementation details, we will also discuss how RFID helps to protect the welfare of consumers through food safety and quality."

Targeted toward agriculture, produce and meat manufacturers, distributors and retailers, the day-long Food Traceability workshop will also cover the following topics:

  • Achieving end-to-end food safety;

  • Opportunities and challenges using RFID in the livestock industry;

  • Temperature monitoring throughout the supply chain;

  • Strategies to integrate the paper trail with the product trail;

  • Using thin printed batteries for temperature monitoring in food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications;

  • From food safety to demand planning: leveraging RFID-enabled visibility across the supply chain.

New tools & technologies
Workshop attendees will learn about new tools and technologies for food supply chain optimization and authentication including specific information about RFID tag and reader systems, data management solutions and implementation services.

The symposium concludes with a roundtable discussion with experienced RFID technology adopters moderated by the workshop's chairperson, Ann Grackin, managing director with Marsh, the world's leading insurance broker and risk advisor.
