The UK-based RFID design services provider, Innovision Research & Technology plc, has teamed up with mass transit firm, BemroseBooth, to develop a low-cost RFID chip that meets the new ITSO standard for smart ticketing.
Innovision's new Jewel chip is one of the products included in the new ITSO (Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation) v2.1 standard for low-cost RFID schemes in UK mass transit. The product also claims a silicon size some 30% smaller than its nearest competitor.
Adherence to both the ITSO and ISO14443A standards were vital in the product's development for use with existing and future mass transit fare collection systems, and Innovision R&T chose to work with BemroseBooth to ensure ease of manufacture and suitability for lowest-cost ticket types.
"We are delighted to see Jewel being adopted in the new ITSO low-cost standard," said Andy Blundell, BemroseBooth's business development director. "Our overall policy is silicon-neutrality, and Jewel will take its place alongside chips from the main RF providers in our recommendations to clients."
"We are very pleased that BemroseBooth decided to take the first Jewel licence," said Trevor Crotch-Harvey, sales and marketing director for Innovision R&T.
