EPCglobal, part of global supply chain standards body GS1, has awarded its first certification to RFID technologies that meet its global standards.

The certification list included Alien Technology, Applied Wireless Devices, Impinj, Intermec Technologies, MaxID Group, Symbol Technologies, and ThingMagic.

The Certification Marks, awarded during the 2005 EPCglobal US Conference, certify that the hardware products have been tested and will work according to the EPCglobal UHF Generation 2 Air Interface Protocol Standard ratified in December 2004.

Testing for Certification Marks is conducted by MET Laboratories, a third-party, globally-recognised testing facility.

Test centres
EPCglobal has also just announced a global network of accredited testing centres for RFID and performance testing, with the following locations having received accreditation:

• METRO Group AG/GS1 Germany RFID Test centre in Neuss, Germany;
   
• Pacific RFID Performance Solutions in Hsinchu, Taiwan;
   
• Kimberly-Clark Corporation Auto-ID Sensing Technologies Performance Test centre in Neenah, Wisconsin, USA
   
• RFID Research centre (a unit of the Information Technology Research Institute at Sam M. Walton College of Business) at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA.

"We want to enable companies that are implementing EPCglobal Standards in their businesses to have easy access to unbiased, objective and reliable information about EPC hardware," said Chris Adcock, president of EPCglobal Inc. "This way, companies will be able to focus on their business at hand better and have confidence in the products they select for EPC implementations."
