AeroScout deploys Wi-Fi RFID on 2 new campuses
Thursday September 18, 2008

Two universities have implemented AeroScout RFID tracking technology to track people and equipment throughout their respective campuses.

Lincoln University, a four-year liberal arts college in Pennsylvania that serves 1,800 undergraduate and 500 graduate students, is using AeroScout's solution to track the real-time location of equipment, such as television cameras, portable digital video recorders and maintenance equipment.

AeroScout T3 Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tags are attached to university equipment and communicate with Lincoln's Cisco Unified Wireless Network. AeroScout's MobileView software then displays the location of the tags in real time, and if a tagged piece of equipment leaves its predetermined zone, an alert is automatically sent to the university's IT department.

Lincoln also plans to tag IT assets, such as PCs, and use the AeroScout solution to improve the IT department's workflow.

People too
Strong Rock Christian School of Locust Grove, Georgia, includes an elementary school, middle school and high school on its 168-acre campus. Strong Rock is using AeroScout's solution to track the location of visitors in real time to ensure campus security and student safety.

All campus visitors, including parents, contractors, and outside vendors, are provided with AeroScout T2 Tags that communicate with Strong Rock's Cisco Unified Wireless Network, which also provides Internet access to faculty and students while they're in motion on campus.

AeroScout's MobileView software displays the location of each person wearing a clip-on tag in real time on a map of the campus monitored by school security. If a visitor, such as a repair person, is not in their intended destination on campus, the AeroScout solution alerts security.

Use existing networks
According to Gabi Daniely, "Wi-Fi is becoming pervasive in educational institutions from elementary schools to universities, and this infrastructure can be leveraged for visibility solutions. Unified Asset Visibility already helps many organisations in the healthcare, manufacturing and logistics industries significantly improve their operations. It's also a natural fit for educational institutions that can use their existing networks to improve security and monitor mobile assets."
