In a new three-way strategic partnership, LXE, Intel and Sirit are to collaborate on forklift-mounted RFID data collection solutions, with development efforts including antennae and RFID readers for these applications.
LXE made the announcement that it is now working with Intel and Sirit to produce a robust, forklift-mounted RFID data collection solution for use in warehousing and distribution. The aim of the technology partnership is produce solutions that enable such companies to realise the benefits of RFID throughout their warehouses, going beyond simple retailer RFID mandate compliance.
The final systems will use the Intel IXP4XX range of network processors for application processing and network transmission, which are based on high- performance, low-power Intel XScale technology (which enables implementation in a variety of form factors).
LXE brings to the effort some 35 years of experience in developing wireless products and solutions, antenna engineering talent (through its sister divisions in EMS Technologies), and a customer base including many large companies that are already implementing RFID in their supply chain operations.
Sirit is to provide its RFID design capabilities, and will provide the necessary RFID expertise and RFID reader module components supporting EPCglobal Class 0, Class 0+, Class 1 and UHF Gen2 protocols. The reader will also use Sirit's existing technology collaboration with Intel to produce standards-based building block technology for RFID readers.
Intel provides a wide range of computing and communications building blocks to support the growing RFID infrastructure. According to Doug Davis, Intel's Digital Enterprise Group's vice president, "This development effort can help customers use an RFID infrastructure to rapidly realise cost savings at the warehouse."
"In particular, we look forward to following the success of a mobile, standards- based solution such as LXE's MX3-RFID with a forklift solution as supply chain customers move beyond compliance to reap benefits of RFID internally," concluded William Staudt, president and CEO for Sirit Inc.
