AeroScout has announced an RFID installation at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, which has adopted the technology to track thousands of infusion pumps and other high-value equipment across four of its distributed campuses in New York City.
According to Dr Steven Erde, VP of IT & Innovation at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, improved visibility of assets allows the hospital to free up the time spent monitoring those assets, so staff and technicians can do what they do best: looking after patients.
Four installations
The AeroScout Healthcare Visibility Solution has been installed at four of New York-Presbyterian Hospital's campuses (New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical centre, New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical centre, New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and New York-Presbyterian/Allen Pavilion).
The choice of AeroScout and installation followed a comprehensive review of the vendors and technologies in the asset tracking, real-time location (RTLS) and RFID markets. The Hospital has deployed over 3,000 tracked assets so far, and plans to expand to 10,000.
Active RFID/Wi-Fi used
The solution uses AeroScout's Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tags to track the location and maintenance status of Sigma infusion pumps and other assets, over the Hospital's Cisco Wi-Fi network.
The tags are mounted on the pumps with a custom bracket created by AeroScout and Sigma. As they move throughout the Hospital, they are tracked in real-time. When a tag requires cleaning or maintenance, nurses and other staff can press a call button on the tag to send a request to the biomedical engineering department.
Monitoring assets
Hospital staff use AeroScout's Web-based MobileView software platform to view current or historical asset movement, and search for pumps by maintenance status.
Because the AeroScout software and Cisco network are distributed across the facilities, staff have an enterprise view of their medical assets from a single Web interface. As the installation expands, access to MobileView will extend to multiple applications and stakeholders within the Hospital, including nursing and materials management.
