NY drivers' licences to incorporate RFID
Tuesday September 23, 2008

De La Rue Identity Systems has announced that it is supplying the New York State DMV with the solution to issue its new WHTI-compliant Enhanced Driver License (EDL).

The EDL includes a range of pre-printed security features on the front and back of the card and incorporates an RFID tag and antenna.

Parallel license
The EDL will be issued alongside the existing New York State driver license (which is also supplied by De La Rue). The EDL is being issued from this month to US citizens with New York State residency.

The license can also be used in place of passports for travel by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. New York State is expected to benefit economically as the EDL will allow faster and easier movement of people and trade at the New York State/Canadian border, while border security will also be increased.

Validity
The EDL will be valid for a period of eight years from the date of issue, subject to the type of license, with combined volumes of around 5 million per year expected for the EDL and existing license. In practical terms, the application process will follow that of the existing driver license at 120 New York State DMV offices.

The EDL itself is made from the same material as the existing license to ensure that it has the same look and feel. According to Jim Richards, director of sales at De La Rue Identity Systems, "Our focus has been and continues to be on security, quality, performance, and innovation - factors which have proved important in our long-term partnership with New York State Department of Motor Vehicles."
