University upgrades RFID food tracking lab
Wednesday March 31, 2004

The Research Center for Food Distribution and Retailing at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), is running an RFID lab to develop best practices in using RFID technology for tracking food products.

The research centre was set up to test a variety of RFID readers and antennae for tracking specific food products (such as packages of strawberries). After testing, the centre will be able to publish guidelines for the use of RFID technologies related to individual food products.

Franwell Software, an RFID solutions integrator and software developer for the agriculture/food industry, has embedded the iMotion platform from GlobeRanger into its own Agware software suite and RFID compliance offerings, which have been implemented at the University's food tracking research lab.

"Franwell has designed a solution, on GlobeRanger's platform, that gave us a structured way to easily test many different types of vendor hardware for tracking food products," said Dr Jeffrey Brecht, director for the University of Florida's food distribution research center.

"This solution enables us to maintain testing consistency between many different reader and antenna configurations without coding," added Dr Jean-Pierre Emond.
