Oakland Coliseum adopts RFID for safety
Tuesday September 30, 2008

In the US, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - home to the Oakland Athletics, Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors, as well as other sporting events, concerts and family shows - is using AeroScout's Wi-Fi-based Active RFID solution to enhance event safety.

The coliseum recently installed the AeroScout and VenueSoft solution to help staff quickly deploy response teams, such as security, police, medical, or facilities personnel, when issues arise during events.

For any given response service, different areas of the coliseum may be served by different companies or departments. If something happens during an event that requires immediate attention, the venue needs to ensure that the right response team is called to the right location as quickly and efficiently as possible.

To solve this problem, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum's 150 ushers, positioned throughout the facility, carry VenueSoft's VenueAlert handheld devices equipped with AeroScout T2 Active RFID tags. Each device has eight one-touch buttons that perform specific pre-coded functions, such as notify police, notify medical, and notify the cleanup crew.

If an incident occurs, such as a medical emergency, an usher simply presses the appropriate button to alert the medical response team that serves that specific area of the coliseum.

Location information from the AeroScout tags integrated into the handheld devices is used to determine which response team to notify for the particular area of the coliseum. That information is then also sent to a third-party facilities management system, which is integrated with AeroScout's MobileView software.
