In a large-scale deployment, the US drug store retailer Walgreens has decided to use RFID technology in its day-to-day operations to help achieve the company's goal of 100% shipping accuracy from its distribution centres to its stores.
Walgreens has deployed an advanced, large-scale RFID system to aid the overall goal of 100% shipping accuracy from distribution centre to hundreds of stores by scanning - in real-time - every single product loaded into every truck and immediately alerting workers of any potential shipping mistakes.
Key components of the system include:
- Blue Vector's edge processing intelligence, performed locally at every shipping door to ensure rapid response;
- Tight integration with Walgreens' warehouse management system to allow each dock door to compare each departing item with the planned shipping manifest and immediately detect errors;
- User-friendly displays to inform workers about how to correct problems as they occur;
- Automated tag verification, diversion, and repair processes;
- Business logic to help ensure that items are loaded in the correct order for multi-store loads.
The system was designed to replace all paperwork and barcode scanning during shipment loading. The system then confirms when loads are correct and complete, and automatically informs the warehouse management system.
