RFID chips that deliver low cost, long range, field-rewritable functionality have been unveiled by Impinj Inc, which manufactures chips using its proprietary self-adaptive silicon circuit design technology.
According to Impinj, its self-adaptive silicon technology allows standard logic CMOS chips to deliver high performance while consuming very little power. This improves performance for several key analogue building blocks of RFID products, including rectifiers, oscillators, and modems. The technology also underlies Impinj's AEON non-volatile memory - an embedded solution that enables read/write memory access without needing a specialised semiconductor manufacturing process.
"We are excited to announce our entry into the RFID market and see the great potential for self-adaptive silicon to provide performance enhancements for RFID systems," said Dr William Colleran, Impinj's president and CEO.
Impinj began its work on RFID technologies in 2002, taking part in some of the standard-setting work of the Auto-ID centre. The company still participates actively in EPCglobal Inc.'s standards development, and has contributed to the air interface and protocol for UHF standards. To ensure that its products address global RFID markets, Impinj also supports the International Standards Organisation (ISO) initiative by participating in ISO's US delegation.
Impinj's RFID products will be introduced later this year. The company will make more announcements revealing industry partnerships and specific product plans in the coming months.
