Mallinckrodt to use RFID for full drug tracking
Wednesday September 28, 2005

ADT Security Services Inc. has been contracted by the US-based generic drug maker Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals to provide an integrated RFID solution for the tracking of prescription drug products from the point of manufacture to the retail store.

The initial RFID solution provided by ADT for Mallinckrodt is a pilot project that involves tagging bottles of selected Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals pain killers. RFID tags are placed on bottles as they leave Mallinckrodt's distribution centre in Hobart, NY.

The RFID tags can then be used by retailers to continue to track the product throughout their supply chain, including inventory tracking. Mallinckrodt plans to expand the RFID solution to other products shipped both to distributors and directly to pharmaceutical retailers. Some drug retailers have recently called for the tagging of all Schedule II drugs by large pharmaceutical companies.

According to Vince Kaiman, Mallinckrodt's vice president of pharmaceuticals, "RFID tagging will provide valuable information on the location and movement of our product, creating efficiencies across the entire supply chain, including added value for our customers in terms of inventory control and enhanced security that is so critical for controlled substances."

ADT provided the RFID technology and services for the installation at Mallinckrodt, including pre-product testing, tags, Sensormatic Agile 2 readers and antennas. Mallinckrodt is also in negotiations with OAT Systems to provide its Oat Foundation Suite software for handling the data collected by the RFID readers.
