Identec develops satellite-assisted RFID tags
Tuesday June 19, 2007

Identec Solutions, a developer of wireless tracking and tracing solutions that include intelligent long-range active RFID technology, has announced the release of its first independently intelligent RFID tag.

Identec developed a satellite assisted tag that can isolate the specific location and movement of an asset. Gerhard Schedler, CEO for Identec Solutions, said that with a read/write range in excess of 500 meters, the new GPS Tag can be activated at any time with a reader, providing easier access and reduced infrastructure needs.

Built-in intelligence
The intelligence of the tag lies within the tag itself. Self tracking, the GPS Tag uses satellites in combination with RFID technology to chart its own route and movement.

Once within range of an Identec Solutions reader the GPS Tag can then provide the necessary information about the asset's movements.

Potential applications
Use of the technology is well suited to any type of asset or personnel tracking application, and in particular for container and port transit. Ultimately the receiver will be able ascertain the exact route and journey of any asset or person. Not only could this system provide better control than before, but it could also allow for far greater security and scrutiny.
