Oil rig workers protected with active RFID tags
Friday July 11, 2008

Identec Solutions reports that its RFID-based WatcherSeries tracking technology has been selected to proactively protect employee lives on oil rigs by a leading energy supplier.

As the third largest integrated energy company in the US and the fifth largest refiner in the world, ConocoPhillips required a system for its platforms within the Ekofisk Complex, on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, that would be both unfailing and effective during any possible emergency situation.

Complex protection needs
Due to the complex nature of ConocoPhillips offshore work environments, selecting a system that protected valuable lives while at same time meeting the exceptionally stringent certification criteria necessary proved challenging. It was also essential that employees were assured that their privacy would not be compromised, or that their data would not be used in conflict with the Privacy Act.

"We are using the technology as an aid to locate offshore personnel on Ekofisk in the event of an emergency or during training," said Emil Anderson, ConocoPhillips project IT manager. "It should also be noted that several other operators in the North Sea will soon be installing the system."

How it works
All employees are provided with an active RFID tag which they carry, similarly to an ID tag. A map of the facility and a real-time headcount is available for reference in the event of an emergency. In addition, readers are installed at all mustering stations, allowing point coordinators real-time access and overview of any missing personnel.

The result is enhanced operational efficiency when dealing with employee safety and security. ConocoPhillips now has a real-time headcount of all its employees, efficient and safe entry and exit at all points, and significant time reduction when accounting for employees. Additionally, strict regulations dictate the regular practise of evacuation drills on all offshore platforms which can be a time consuming and cumbersome effort. The system therefore offers real-time information so that the safe evacuation of personnel can be quickly verified during evacuation training.

Designed for remote locations
Identec's WatcherSeries technology provides a complete solution for tracking personnel in environments where access to real time employee information during an emergency situation is vital. Designed specifically for remote and isolated locations, the technology plays a key role in employee safety, with many unions and personnel already embracing such enhanced safety efforts.

"The ConocoPhillips contract emphasizes our position as a provider of complete RFID solutions within the oil, gas and mining industries," commented Gerhard Schedler, CEO and President for Identec Solutions.
