RFID could contain future SARS outbreaks
Tuesday January 20, 2004

RFID technology could be used in efforts to prevent or contain future potential epidemic outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) by helping hospital staff to determine when and where personnel may have been in contact with patients infected by the disease, according to Savi Technology. In a hospital, an RFID tag can be placed on every member of the medical staff and, as they pass through RFID 'Signposts' located at every entrance and exit, the data is stored on a 'Site Manager' server. Finally, a web-based query system can monitor when particular employees entered or left a particular area. Such a system, developed by RFID systems specialist CAST, has been in use at Ton Yen General Hospital in Taiwan, which is believed to be an efficiently safe-guarded place in case an epidemic were to break out again. Officials are ready to deploy RFID in all hospitals if necessary.
