San Francisco Bay transport goes contactless
Wednesday December 10, 2003

The entire San Francisco Bay transport network is to be equipped with RFID contactless cards supplied by the French smart card firm, ASK. The contract awarded by the transport network calls for 400,000 dual interface cards. Inhabitants of San Francisco Bay are now able to use a single ticket to travel on any form of public transport (bus, ferry, tram, train, and railcar), thanks to the electronic ticketing solution, dubbed 'TransLink'. The card provides a common system for all ticketing transactions, valid for all transport companies and also for parking meters. "The contactless smart card chosen provides a range of multi-operator fare plans, plus a very secure payment system, " said Xavier Bon, vice president of sales and marketing for ASK.
