The personal wrist-watch industry has to fight against counterfeit and unlicensed goods entering the supply chain. In 'grey' markets watches are illegally sold through non-official resellers, and such unauthorised distribution channels have a harmful impact on watch brands. The details of a tracking and authentication system, from Swiss firm Winwatch, have been finalised and announced. Winwatch is to licence usage of its web-based system called Brand Control System which uses RFID technology to track and monitor product movements to help identify counterfeit watches. RFID chips are attached to watches to track their location and verify their authenticity, and watch factories, distributors and retail stores equipped with readers can check a watch's authenticity, status and registered location by connecting to the central Brand/Product Database. Watches can be validated using a PC, PDA or a notebook computer that communicates using the internet with the Brand Control System. The system can be hosted and managed by system integrators, application hosting operators, or directly by each watch manufacturer.
