In its financial results statement for the third quarter (ending September 28th, 2003), Checkpoint Systems, Inc. revealed that its RFID (radio frequency identification) technology research and development budget had been boosted during the year. "Consistent with our expectations, we increased spending on marketing and research and development during the third quarter, particularly in RFID, to support the industry's EPC (electronic product code) initiatives. Also, we are actively evaluating both internal and external sources of growth to strengthen and improve our business," noted Checkpoint's chairman and CEO, George Off. The firm's third quarter 2003 net earnings were US$10.0 million, compared to net earnings of US$6.4 million in the third quarter of 2002.
