Elsevier Food International has interviewed Tesco's CEO (and co-chair of the forthcoming ECR Conference), Sir Terry Leahy, reporting his opinions about the RFID market and adoption. According to Leahy, global standards are going to happen, with the combination EAN-UCC being an important step. What's more, he said that "RFID tracks products, not people. There are persistent misunderstandings on RFID and privacy. Some people like to go straight into a science fiction world, painting a colourful perspective of how privacy could be invaded." He added, "Years ago, when the barcode was introduced, we had the same discussions. Going back to reality, we are just in the initial phase of attaching RFID tags to cases and pallets. This to efficiently manage waste, recover products and reduce costs while improving efficiency in the supply chain. That's in the interest of all."
