The Underwater World aquarium in Singapore has implanted approximately 20 fish in its Living Fossils exhibition tank with low frequency 23mm glass RFID transponders from Texas Instruments. The aquarium claims that this is the first RFID system used for a sea aquarium exhibit. When the fish pass the RFID readers, a touch screen displays information about the fish and allows visitors to find out more details such as the diet, characteristics and species name of the fish. Fish being tagged include: Arapaima, Alligator Gar, Flower Ray, Pacu, Redtail Catfish, Shovelnose Catfish, and Walking Catfish. The system cost US$19,600 and took two months to set up. The aquarium is also considering tagging sharks with RFID technology. It is said that the aquarium's systems integrator, Oregon RFID, chose TI's LF tags specifically because of their reliable performance even in the water. Oregon RFID had used TI LF tags for a number of fish-tagging applications prior to UWW.
